music quickpick – Listen to Tool
Posted on March 15th, 2009 7 commentsHere’s just a quick music recommendation that I have (if you haven’t discovered them already). The reason I recommend these guys is their ability to turn music into more of an artform involving ambience, yet their music also finds powerful ways to convey messages. The evolution of their sound has progressed quite amazingly, and in this same way the listener can follow the trail of thought from earlier albums to new. The impact of their messages has stayed the same throughout their musical career. This means they’ve stayed true to themselves and what they have to say as artists
Music fanatics that haven’t listened to Tool can start in just by what plays on the radio (the radio sucks but at least it’s a start). Listen carefully to the lyrics in “Vicarious”. People sing along all the time, but are they really listening to what’s being said? It’s a powerful analysis of modern culture and the way people live. It speaks of the near voyeuristic view people have on what’s happening with the world. This is where the lyrical genius of Tool really shines. They’re ability to convey their message even through the radio without conventional inhibitions keeping them at bay. What you’ll find with Tool is their ingenious touch to lyrical qualities, but the vessel they use to submit this sounds great! Their combined musical talent is untouched.
Danny Carey (drummer) provides some of the most complex beats it will blow your mind. Trying to play along in your head will confuse you and intrigue you as to what’s going on in the song. The mood, tone, and emotion (excitement) will be carried through by the drums of Danny Carey. Adam Jones’ guitar has stayed true to the momentum of the band. He’s able to come up with some pretty freaking amazing guitar riffs. Some complain that he’s too simplistic. Even if this is so, can’t simplistic be intriguing as well? His talent shines in his composition; yet people tend to worry about technical skill (which he has plenty of). What I could say about Maynard Keenan (vocals) will not do justice, because his intonation and repetoir of messages is astounding. Justin Chancellor (bass) accompanies the flow of music in amazing ways, and you’ll find yourself playing along with the bass line to a song because of its flow and beat.
Whether it be sound, message, flow, or soul; Tool has it all to play in their music. Just listen to what you find in their music and you’ll be surprised. Listen to them. You should!
Happy listening folks

Good read … headline catchy … good points, some of which I have learned along the way as well (humility, grace, layoff the controversial stuff). Will share with my colleagues at work as we begin blogging from a corporate perspective. Thanks!
