Break free from the radio
Posted on March 13th, 2009 17 commentsThese may be harsh words for some, but this is a vital part of my life. Listening to the radio is easy. A lot of people have it playing just by default without much thought to it. This all ties back to pop culture and whatnot, which is all fine and good in its own regard. There’s just one thing about it that really grinds my gears. It absolutely slaughters songs and their likeability. One thing that the radio will never understand is “moderation”.
It starts with you hearing a brand spanking new song on the radio that you like. It’s got a catchy beat and good melody. Great! Thumbs up. No problems there. However, this song will go from lower popularity to the momentum of a freight train through the exponential demand of listeners. It’ll be played about every 5 minutes, and you can easily catch it playing on two stations at the same time. This is how the radio takes a good song, blends it until its unrecognizable slop, and then pours it into the cesspool of songs long forgotten.

Let's listen to some more Britney Spears! Where'd her song go again? It all looks the same..
What also gets me while listening to the radio is the advertisements. Advertising is a part of life, and has its place in business. I won’t blame businesses for wanting to get their name broadcast. Although this is true, if you have the opportunity to skip the loud, deep-voiced man shouting about furniture sales, won’t you skip it? I mean that’s one of the perks people have found lately with DVRs. Commercials on TV are now reduced to mere slide-shows while fast forwarding through them. Everybody loves that!
I say all these things because music is something that’s very near and dear to my heart. I think it can be very therapeutic for people in the right use, but the music that will open your eyes to new genres and ideas won’t be found on the radio (most stations out there anyways. There ARE a few gems. Dont’ get me wrong). There’s music out there that can make people that will excite, make people cry, relax, or contemplate life. What I’m saying is to enjoy music for fun, and also find your niche for music that really makes you think or that you can relate to. Have that music available to you in your car as an escape from the blaring skipping record that we call “the radio”. A song you’re tired of hearing a thousand times over isn’t going to do anything for you after a stressful day at work.
Escape it. You should!

Great article. There’s a lot of good data here, though I did want to let you know something – I am running Mac OS X with the circulating beta of Firefox, and the look and feel of your blog is kind of bizarre for me. I can read the articles, but the navigation doesn’t function so great.

I was reading something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your position on it is diametrically opposed to what I read to begin with. I am still mulling over the diverse points of view, but I’m leaning to a great extent toward yours. And no matter, that’s what is so good about modern-day democracy and the marketplace of ideas online.
